Knowledges of Low temperature lithium battery

Why Ordinary Lithium Batteries Fail in the Cold

A standard lithium-ion cell is rated for roughly −20°C to 60°C discharge and 0°C to 45°C charging. Push it below those limits and four failure mechanisms appear quickly.

1. Internal resistance rises sharply. Low temperature thickens the electrolyte and slows lithium-ion migration through the separator. As internal resistance climbs, voltage sags under load, available power drops, and a device that works at room temperature may fail to start at all.

2. Capacity fades. Chemical kinetics slow down, so fewer of the rated lithium ions reach the electrodes during a discharge cycle. A typical consumer cell delivers only about 50–70% of its rated capacity at −20°C; at −40°C it may deliver far less or no usable energy.

3. Charging below 0°C causes lithium plating. When a standard cell is charged below freezing, lithium ions cannot intercalate into the graphite anode fast enough and instead deposit as metallic lithium on its surface. This lithium plating permanently reduces capacity, lowers cycle life, and can create internal short-circuit and thermal-runaway risks.

4. Accelerated degradation and safety risk. Repeated cold operation, especially with charging in freezing conditions, produces uneven lithium deposition and mechanical stress on electrodes. Capacity loss becomes permanent, and in severe cases plated lithium can puncture the separator.

A genuine low temperature lithium ion battery addresses these mechanisms at the design level: low-viscosity electrolyte blends with low-freezing-point solvents and additives, optimized anode materials, and a smart BMS — optionally with PTC self-heating — that blocks unsafe low-temperature charging until cells are warm enough.
